Here in Florida there is no shortage of bee farmers and Citrus County has become a mecca for apiaries – this a fancy term for a bee yard! In 2017, close to 4,500 bee keepers registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture.
Two of the most popular and scenic routes in the area are the Ozello Trail and Fort Island Trail. Both run conveniently right off of US-19, expose you to gorgeous, twisting landscapes and are one straight 'run to the sun'!!
The Yulee Sugar Mill began operating in 1851 to process the sugar cane grown by Yulee in the rich lowlands along the Homosassa River. The machinery was brought in by ship from New York and included a state of the art steam engine which drove the grinding machinery.
