Manatees are one of the most gentle and docile marine mammals worldwide. Unfortunately, they are also one of the most vulnerable to human interference. To protect these gentle giants, here are some ways you can help manatees:
1. Respect their habitat.
Manatees live in shallow coastal waters and rivers, so it’s essential to be mindful of their habitat when you’re out in the water. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid disturbing their home.
2. Watch for them.
Manatees are slow-moving and can be difficult to spot, so it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and watch for them. If you see a manatee in the water, maintain a safe distance and do not disturb them.
3. Report any injuries or deaths.
If you spot an injured or dead manatee, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Wildlife
Hotline at 1-888-404-FWCC.
4. Donate to manatee care facilities.
There are five facilities that are permitted to take in sick and injured manatees: Zoo Tampa, SeaWorld Orlando, Miami Seaquarium, Jacksonville Zoo, and Gardens, and Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park. There are additional facilities that help care for manatees after the initial rescue and assessment. Consider donating to support their work.
5. Spread awareness.
Educate yourself and others on the importance of manatee conservation and the threats they face. Share your knowledge and encourage others to help protect these amazing animals by posting articles, videos, and photos about manatees to your social media accounts and encouraging your followers to share.
By following these simple steps, you can help protect manatees and ensure a future for these gentle giants that we’ve all fallen in love with.
