Swim with Manatee - FAQs

General Questions

  • Crystal River, Florida, is the one of the only places in the world where you can legally and ethically swim with manatees in the wild.

  • Yes — but only in designated areas like Crystal River, and only if you follow U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service guidelines (known as “Manatee Manners”).

  • Winter (November–March) is peak season because hundreds gather in the warm springs. In summer, fewer manatees are around, but we still spot them!

  • Manatees are a protected, wild species, which means every tour is a little different — and that’s part of the magic! They aren’t contained or trained; they roam freely throughout the refuge and come and go as they please.

The number of manatees you’ll encounter depends on factors like weather, tides, and season. In the colder winter months, Crystal River becomes a true manatee hotspot, with large groups gathering in the warm springs. In the warmer summer months, fewer manatees migrate in, but we’re lucky to have a resident population that stays year-round, so there are still opportunities to swim alongside these gentle giants.

No two days are ever the same — and that’s exactly what makes meeting manatees in their natural habitat such a special, one-of-a-kind experience.

  • At River Ventures we strive to provide every guest with an unforgettable experience on our Swim with the Manatee Tours. However, manatees are wild animals in their own natural habitat with constantly changing conditions. River Ventures offers an optional, manatee guarantee upgrade with each tour.

The Manatee Guarantee upgrade takes the risk out of your tour by guaranteeing that you’ll have the opportunity to swim with manatees. If you are unable to swim with manatees during your tour, we will fully refund you.

Please note: the Manatee Guarantee does not cover situations where a guest is unable or unwilling to participate in the activity or fails to adhere to instructions and rules given by River Ventures crew.

Booking & Tour Info

  • Our tours run 3 hours from start of tour to return to shop. That includes orientation, boat ride, and time in the water.

  • Our boats are docked in the heart of Crystal River — as close to the springs as you can possibly get. That means your travel time on the boat doesn’t cut into your time in the water with the manatees.

That said, remember that manatees are wild animals, and they move around based on weather, tides, and water temperatures. This means the boat ride can vary from day to day. In warmer months, we often ride a little longer while searching, while in colder weather the manatees gather in the springs, making them easier to find with less ride time.

Our U.S. Coast Guard–certified Captains know these waters inside and out. They’re out here every single day and will always do their best to locate manatees quickly and efficiently, no matter the conditions.

  • Three Sisters Springs is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and access is controlled for the protection of the manatees and their habitat. This means the springs may be open or closed to swimmers at any time, and we cannot guarantee entry on every tour.

That said, our experienced Captains and guides know the waterways inside and out. Whether or not we can enter Three Sisters during your tour, we’ll always take you to the best available locations to ensure you have an unforgettable manatee experience.

  • We offer multiple departures daily. Early morning tours often have fewer crowds and clearer water.

  • We recommend booking in advance — tours often sell out, especially in peak season. Walk-ins are welcome if space is available.

  • Yes! We run tours every month of the year. Winter has the highest numbers of manatees, but spring and summer bring fewer crowds and warmer weather.

  • We run tours rain or shine, and very rarely do we cancel due to poor weather. Because we’re located in a small, protected bay along the coast, most storms pass quickly and have little impact on your experience.

In the event of heavy rain, lightning, or strong winds, we may delay or postpone a tour until conditions improve. If that happens, we always do our best to make sure you still get the full time on the water that you paid for.

If a tour must be cancelled, you’ll always have the option of a full refund or rescheduling. If conditions are safe but you’d prefer not to go out, we’re happy to work with you to reschedule or provide gift certificates for a future visit.

When larger storms are approaching, we typically call the day before to update our guests and offer options — which is why it’s important to provide reliable contact information when booking.

At the end of the day, we’re all at the mercy of Mother Nature. And this is Florida — the forecast can change in minutes! If you’re ever unsure, just give us a call. We’ll keep you informed and make sure your adventure is both safe and enjoyable.

  • Reservations canceled five calendar days prior to your Tour will receive a full refund less the booking fee of 4%.  Any Tour canceled by River Ventures due to inclement weather or other conditions beyond our control shall receive a 100% refund.

Reservations canceled less than the time period or conditions outlined above will be offered a chance to reschedule (based on availability) or receive a voucher for the Tour for the full amount paid.

What’s Included

  • Yes — all gear is included, and our wetsuits help keep you warm while floating comfortably.

  • We have wetsuits for both Children and Adults and in sizes up to 5x. We do require that you wear a wetsuit when you snorkel with the manatees as they help you stay warm, buoyant, and assist you in keeping your feet near the top of the water and not dangling, which often will stir up the bottom and scare the manatees.

  • Absolutely, as long as it’s snorkel gear (no scuba tanks allowed). Our guides may inspect it for safety.

  • No fins needed! At River Ventures, we stopped using fins years ago as part of our commitment to creating a more animal-friendly environment.

Most of the time, we’re floating in just 4–6 feet of water, and because we practice passive observation (not chasing manatees), fins simply aren’t necessary. In fact, fins can cause problems by:

    • Accidentally kicking other swimmers or wildlife

    • Stirring up the bottom and clouding the water

    • Making the experience feel more stressful than serene

We’ve found that without fins, our guests have clearer water, calmer interactions, and a more relaxed experience overall. So leave the fins at home — all you need to do is float and enjoy!

  • River Ventures tour prices are all-inclusive. Your wetsuit, gear, parking, captain, guide, and even bottled water is included in your price. You will have the option to leave gratuities or purchase photo packages after your tour, but there are no other required fees associated with your tour after booking.

  • Yes! Our tours include a guide with an underwater camera. Their photos/videos are available for purchase after your trip.

  • Yes, our adventure center has clean restrooms and changing areas for your comfort.

  • Yes, choose a VIP tour to enjoy our luxury pontoons that are heated in winter, and include hot chocolate/coffee on board to warm you up after your swim.

  • All of our boats are equipped with complete roof overs and have clear vinyl glass enclosures that can be rolled down during cold weather. These features make for a comfortable ride to and from the swim areas, especially during cold winter days. Our boats do not have bathrooms on board, but in case of emergency, the docks are not very far away.

Safety & Rules

  • Yes — manatees are gentle giants. The biggest safety rule is to move slowly and calmly in the water.

  • Remember — we are guests in the home of these endangered animals. It’s a privilege to share their natural habitat, and it’s essential that we treat them with the respect they deserve.

This is not a petting zoo, and no one should ever expect to touch a manatee. That said, sometimes these curious animals may choose to engage with us. By law, a single gentle, open-hand touch is allowed if a manatee initiates the interaction.

At River Ventures, we encourage passive observation. We’ve found that the less we reach out, the longer manatees linger around us — creating calmer, more meaningful encounters.Feeding is strictly prohibited.

  • Manatees are protected under both the Endangered Species Act, and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Both the State of Florida and the U.S. Federal Government oversee the protection of the manatee. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission (FWC) and the United States Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) have laws in place to ensure the safety of the manatees. These laws are strictly enforced and must be followed by everyone who enters the water. Upon arrival at our center, we will have you watch a movie covering your Manatee Manatees, ie the do’s and don’ts of swimming with manatees. We will go over the rules with you so that you are fully aware of the guidelines when you swim with the manatees. You can view these rules by clicking here.

  • Yes — River Ventures provides in-water guides who help spot manatees, keep everyone safe including the manatees, and capture photos.

  • Don’t worry — it happens. Just stay calm, freeze and float, and let the manatee decide if it wants to interact.

Families & Groups

  • Yes! All ages are welcome on our swim with manatee tours; however, parties with children under 3 years old MUST book a PRIVATE TOUR and include the child in your passenger count as Coast Guard even counts infants as a passenger and our boats are rated to hold a specific number of passengers. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Yes — flotation devices like noodles and life vests are available, and our guides will assist. However, its best if children are comfortable in the water and have attempted to snorkel prior to the tour.

  • Yes, we do allow dogs on our PRIVATE manatee tours. However, there are a few things to consider before bringing your furry friend along for the ride.

    1. A PRIVATE tour is REQUIRED.

    2. Your dog and a human supervisor must remain on the boat at all times during the tour.

    3. If your dog is disruptive to the wildlife or destructive to the boat, you and your dog will be immediately returned to the dock with no refund.

    4. Dogs will not be allowed on board without advanced notice. Please call River Ventures 352-564-8687 to book your adventure if you’d like to bring your furry friend along.

    5. Dogs are NOT allowed on scallop or airboat tours.

  • Yes, service animals are allowed on our tours. However, because we operate in close contact with endangered wildlife and in shared spaces with other guests, it is critical that service animals remain under control at all times.

If a service animal is disruptive in any way — to the manatees, other guests, or our crew — both the animal and its owner will be returned to the dock and asked to depart with no refund.

This policy ensures that everyone, including the manatees, has a safe, respectful, and enjoyable experience.

  • Yes — River Ventures offers private manatee tours for families, school trips, and corporate groups. Call 352-564-8687 for more information.

  • Absolutely! We can customize tours for large groups, just give us a call!

  • Yes — we have boats of different sizes and can arrange tours for large parties.

Comfort & Accessibility

  • Yes! We always welcome observers. You can often see the manatees from the boat and sometimes they get close enough to the boat that you can reach down and touch them. Bring your cameras and binoculars and enjoy the surroundings of the refuge. However, we are limited by the number of seats we have, so if you’d like to ride along and observe, please book yourself a seat as well!

  • No problem — most of the experience is floating. We provide noodles and guides to keep you comfortable.

  • Yes, flotation devices are included at no extra charge.

  • Yes — our team does everything possible to accommodate. Please call ahead so we can prepare.

  • We carry wetsuits from child sizes up to 5X adult, so we can fit nearly everyone.

  • Yes — manatees don’t mind murky water. Cold days often bring more manatees into the springs, so it can be even better!

Travel & Logistics

  • All tours leave from our River Ventures Adventure Center 498 SE Kings Bay Drive, Crystal River, FL.

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early for check-in and restroom use. Our swim orientation starts right at your tour time.

Manatee Facts

  • Because they graze all day long! Just like cows on land, manatees munch on seagrass and aquatic plants for up to 8 hours a day. They’re peaceful grazers of the waterways.

  • Adult manatees can reach 10–13 feet long and weigh 800–1,200 pounds — with some even tipping the scales at 1,500 pounds! Despite their size, they’re incredibly gentle.

  • Mostly plants like seagrass, algae, and freshwater vegetation. They can eat 10–15% of their body weight daily — that’s like a person eating 100 heads of lettuce!

  • Not really. Their biggest threats are sadly human-related: boat strikes, habitat loss, and cold stress. That’s why conservation efforts and respectful tours are so important.

  • On average, manatees live 30–40 years, though some have reached their 60s in protected environments.

  • Yes, but only for a few minutes at a time. Manatees are mammals, not fish, so they need to breathe air. A resting manatee surfaces about every 3–5 minutes, but an active one may pop up every 30 seconds.

  • Because they share ancestry with elephants! Look closely at their flippers and you’ll see tiny nails — a clue to their evolutionary past.

  • Manatees are currently listed as threatened, not endangered, but their population still faces serious challenges. Conservation, education, and eco-tourism play a huge role in their survival.

  • Manatees can’t survive in cold water. The springs in Crystal River stay a toasty 72°F year-round, making it the perfect winter refuge for hundreds of manatees.

  • Manatees are naturally curious — they may approach snorkelers or boats. But they’re wild animals, and interactions should always be on their terms. That’s why we follow “Manatee Manners” during every tour.
